Critic's TV picks for Thursday: Grissom tells the 'CSI' team goodbye By Gail Pennington THE ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 01/04/2007 CSI Grissom (William Petersen) says goodbye to his colleagues and prepares to for a teaching sabbatical on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. ( Cliff Lipson/CBS)

The Las Vegas crime lab without Gil Grissom? That's unthinkable but, tonight, Grissom (William Petersen) tells the team goodbye.
CBS' promos for the episode are calculated to whip fans into a panic, but get a grip. Grissom isn't leaving forever. Instead, suffering from corpse overload, he takes a teaching assignment, a sabbatical that gave Petersen (who has executive producer credit on the series) a chance to do a stage play ("A Dublin Carol" at the Trinity Rep in Rhode Island).
Evidence suggests that any single character in an ensemble drama can be replaced. Grissom, however, might be the exception. His dark humor sets the tone that elevates "CSI" above all imitators, including the two other members of its own franchise.
Departing, Grissom labels one of his investigators the rock of the team. Wrong, Gil — you are.
